AOT – Archives of Tasmania – http://www.archives.tas.gov.au

Census – National Census of the British Isles. Conducted each ten years from 1841. Extracts on this site are from 20 March 1851 & 3 April 1881.

Certificate of Freedom – Granted once the full sentence period had been completed.

Conditional Pardon – Granted after a period of ToL, the condition was that the individual could not return to his/her home country or the British Isles.

Hobart Town Gazette – Published weekly. Filmed copies of 1821-1880 are available at the National Library of Australia (http://www.nla.gov.au). Gazette contains records of most Government Business including appointments and Land Titles. Convict details such as Absconders, Recaptures, Permissions to Marry, Granting of ToLs, Pardons and Certificates were promulgated each week.

IGI – International Genealogy Index – maintained by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Contains extracts of Parish Registers and submissions by researchers. Further information and searchable database available at: http://www.familysearch.org

Probation Station – Under the Probation System (1839 – 1854), transportees were assigned to a Probation Station on arrival. These stations provided “gangs” of men to work on roads, bridges etc.

Ticket of Leave (ToL) – After completing Probation, subject to satisfactory conduct, convicts were granted a Ticket of Leave to work in the community. Employers paid the Government, not the Convict. During this period, convicts were still subject to strict conditions and a misdemeanour would attract penalties or the withdrawal of the Ticket.

Trade Directory – Published lists of Trades Persons in a locality, usually the individual had his/her own business.

Valuation Roll – Published in the Hobart Town Gazette, the Roll details property valuations, owners and occupants.
