Daniel Cuttiford 1805-1869 Introduction

Daniel Cuttiford is my* Great, Great, Great Grandfather.

Born in 1805, Dan’s fate remained a mystery for some time. He simply disappeared from Coventry Warwick. His wife, Ann, recorded herself as married on the 1851 Census, but Head of the household.

With the help of John Russell and John Denny, I eventually found an 1842 reference to him in the Coventry Courts, with a record of embezzling a couple of quid and passing counterfeit coins. What punishment he received for these crimes I have yet to uncover.

My next encounter with him was an entry in the Spring Bay Post Office Directory of 1866 which listed him as a Shoemaker in Triabunna. Nothing unusual about that, he appears in the 1830 Coventry Trade Directory as a shoemaker too. The only complication was that Spring Bay (Triabunna) is in Tasmania, Australia.

This site records the results of my following those leads, and eventually finding Dan buried in Triabunna. His shoemaking shop still stands and thanks to the current owner, I have a reward for my efforts.

Dan’s story is not just a self indulgent adventure into Family History, although it started out that way. His life is similar to the other 57,000 odd souls that were transported to Van Deimen’s Land between 1800 and 1854, and deserves recognition.

I offer my sincere thanks to all that helped me in the search, and where possible I have acknowledged them.
